As a renter, you should protect your personal property. If an accident starts a kitchen fire, your possessions may be damaged or ruined. What many renters do not know is that a landlord’s insurance policy does not cover the renter’s personal property. The landlord has no obligation to replace/repair a tenant’s personal belongings, even though the landlord’s insurance policy may cover the damage to the building. If a burglar steals your possessions or a fire or severe weather damages them, a renters insurance policy can allow you to recover their value.
Your REALHome Services and Solutions, Inc. lease agreement requires you to purchase renters insurance with a minimum of $100,000 liability coverage ($300,000 if you have a pet* in a pet approved dwelling; $500,000 if a private pool is attached to the property). You must provide proof of renters insurance prior to moving in to your new home.
You can purchase renters insurance from any other insurance provider. Renters insurance can protect your personal property. It also can provide you with personal liability coverage in the event someone sustains an injury in your home or if you accidentally injure someone or damage property away from your home.
* Except as prohibited by law. The pet fee does not apply to service animals or for small caged animals. A service animal is any animal that is trained to perform tasks that assist people with physical or mental impairment. A service animal is not a pet.
